Update Namecheap DNSSEC

Use this guide when a domain is registered in Namecheap, uses custom nameservers, and needs DNSSEC DS records added or updated at the registrar.

Namecheap also publishes its own support article for this workflow: Managing DNSSEC for domains pointed to Custom DNS

Before You Start

You need access to the Namecheap account that owns the domain.

You also need the DS record values from the DNS or hosting provider that manages DNS for the domain. A DS record includes these fields:

  • KeyTag
  • Algorithm
  • DigestType
  • Digest
warning

Use the exact values provided by the DNS or hosting provider. Incorrect DNSSEC values can cause DNS validation failures for the domain.

Update DNSSEC in Namecheap

  1. Sign in to your Namecheap account.
  2. Open Domain List from the left-hand menu.
  3. Find the domain you want to update and select Manage.
  4. Open the Advanced DNS tab.
  5. Turn on DNSSEC if it is not already enabled.
  6. Add or update the DS record fields using the values from your DNS or hosting provider.
  7. Select the checkmark icon to save the DS record changes.

After Saving

Namecheap says DNSSEC changes can take about 60 minutes to take effect.

If you disable DNSSEC, Namecheap may keep the previously configured DS records and reactivate them if DNSSEC is enabled again later. Review the DS records before re-enabling DNSSEC to make sure they still match the current DNS provider values.
